Great Motorhome Trip in Ireland

Ireland is beautiful country, rich in natural views and with plenty to do and see. However agree Ireland is not motorhome friendly, with its narrow roads, lack of campsites and restricted access to my beauty spots. It is essential that you have planned your trip carefully to maximise your experience of camping in Ireland….and here’s how.

Many will start their road trip in Ireland in Rosslare, the main of access ferry from the UK and continental Europe. Our suggested route takes you all across the of Ireland, taking in Counties Wexford, Waterford, Cork and Kerry. Rosslare strand is about 5 miles from Rosslare Harbour and is stopover if you arrive on late ferry. However it’s to hit the road and move th Wexford town, where the Ferrycarraig Heritage park is worth visit. Follow the road on to New Ross where attractions include the John Kennedy homestead, the Dunbrody Famine ship and the Ros Tapestry. The supermarket carparks of Aldi and Lidl are as good place to park as any, or use the multiple paid car park the quay (where chose to overnight). However heading south and overnighting in the multiple campsites in Fethard-On-Sea is suggested. From you can base for couple of days and visit the Hook Lighthouse, Tintern Abbey and Kennedy Arboretum.

Great beaches include Duncannon, Dollar Bay and Booley Bay. From the quaint town of Arthurstown river crossing ferry takes you of County Wexford. Note “Camping Crazy” in New Ross supply all motorhome and camping accessories and can provide motorhome maintenance.

The 5 minute crossing of the River Suir takes you to County Waterford, where your choice of routes all you to your campsite, Casey’s of Clonea, just ouside Dungarvan. Option 1 takes you from Passage East th the seaside towns of Woodstown, Dunmore East, Tramore and Bonmahon. All these towns have good quality campsites with Tramore the biggest and most commercial. Option 2 takes you from your ferry departure straight to Waterford City – watch for Jack Meades pub for bite to eat. The Waterford Crystal visitor center and Reginalds Tower are the attractions here. Sticking to the main road, 40 minutes takes you to Dungarvan.

From Dungarvan kp moving East Cork, where the Fota Island Safari Park is must visit. Staying South of Cork, the picturesque seaside village of Kinsale is an ideal stopover pt – Garretstown House campsite is highly recommended. Driving th County Cork contains gems including Barley Cove beach. But the destination has to be the amazing Eagle campsite in Ballylickey, West Cork. Situated on penninsula reaching into the Atlantic, it caters for all types of sea based activities.

Final destination is County Kerry the mecca for tourists coming to Ireland. Killarney is the hub and has fine campsites. However the rural towns of Glengarrif, Sneem and Glenbeigh are not to be missed. Enjoy your motorhome experience in Ireland.

The Motorhome Experience – From A New Driver’s Perspective

“There’s to it,” te with experience told me.  “You just have to watch your end when you corner,” they added.  While these are true, there must be lot that they had failed to mention.  What about the width, the height, the lack of visibility, and my nervousness?

We traveled on what is considered to be of the most difficult roads in the province of British Columbia.  was told when we set off, “don’t worry and don’t look down”.  believe they thought te were words to instill confidence in my first-time effort to navigate this highway.

I began to realize as drove that ‘voices of experience’ are so comfortable that they forget to tell all they learned as new drivers of motorhome.  There were learned in ft hours that experienced drivers didn’t think to tell me.

-  In spite of what was told, the rear-view mirror was big help.  When vehicles traveled too close me, was able to the tops of their roofs in the rear-view mirror en if wasn’t able to them in my mirrors.

-  fd it was important to firm grip on the steering wheel when traveling where big rigs are sharing the road with you.  was surprised to discover that the wind they made as they passed rocked the motorhome.  Also, when traveling in spaces, there is strong likelihood there will be gusts of wind across the highway and the motorhome could shift significantly.

-  Steer wide when making right-hand turns.

-  Stay at speed that is comfortable for you.  90 km/h was good speed to begin with.  (When traveling at consistent speed, gas consumption is also reduced).

-  The sl round mirrors on the mirrors can save your life; they are the ones that will let you kw if is in your blind spot.  Make good use of them.

-  Try to angle the vehicle when pulling into traffic in to get the view of the approaching traffic.

-  Stay in the slow lane and don’t feel pressured to go faster than you are comfortable with.

After trips, feel vy comfortable driving our RV and would have no qualms about driving anywhere.
